Decisions...we all have to make them every day. What will we wear, what will we eat, will I get out of bed, etc. Some of these decision are very easy while others are very difficult. You are probably wondering where I am going with this.
Last week the mayor...aka my husbands boss...made a big decision that has really tested me and Dave this week. He decided to make Dave the Building and Codes Director/City Engineer and the man who is currently doing that became the Public Works Director.....swapped them!!!!! Blind sided to say the least! He never asked Dave his feelings or thoughts about making the change, he just did it. See Dave recently received the best news an Engineer can receive and he received it on his birthday of all days....He PASSED the Professional Engineering test, he was a certified Professional Engineer!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday! Then a week later the mayor moves him to this new position. Something just doesn't add up for me. He did know that Dave was pursuing this from the beginning and maybe he had this up his sleeve from the get go. But why would the current Codes guy want to make this change after he was contacted about the Public Works job and was not interested. Are they working in cahoots???? Makes you wonder.
Blown away....that's what I was when Dave told me. And I could see in his eyes he was not happy. I could hear the disappointment in his voice. The only explanation the mayor really gave was he was not 100% pleased with Dave's progress during the past 6 months. The mayor felt like he wasn't getting things done as quickly as the Mayor wanted them done. He felt like Dave would be a better fit for the city as the Code Director and Roger..the other guy...would be best for Public Works. How can you give someone 6 months to make progress when they have jumped in feet first giving 150% to learn the ropes and understand how things are done? What if the city board wasn't pleased with his progress as mayor after 6 months and moved him with no explanation? Would he be happy? After 6 months Dave was finally "getting it" and to have that ripped right out from under you really hurts your ego. Not to mention he actually liked his job, no he LOVED his job! How many folks can say that?? Then in an instant it is gone. Telling his guys was probably the hardest part. They all got along and enjoyed working together. One of them said "Does the mayor just not like us, low class folks"? How do you answer that cause you know its how they feel. Dave and Roger met for lunch Friday for almost 3 hours discussing the situation. Roger didn't seem thrilled but wasn't as upset as Dave, so that makes you think he knew this was coming and was prepared. He wasn't blown away as the rest of us!
Depression....well not diagnosed, but I can tell Dave is very unhappy. Each day I keep thinking it will get better, but no such luck. He just moped around the house all weekend long. He hardly said two words without me starting the conversation. This has been the hardest week in our marriage in a very long time. God is really testing us! As the week has progressed he does seem to be talking more and opening up to me more about his thoughts and feelings. 4 days in he isn't liking the situation any better. He said if it was just the City Engineer part he would be fine, it's the building and codes part he dislikes. He has no interest in plumbing inspections or codes or anything related to it. If he did he would have been an Architect. He is being as positive as he can, but when you are miserable doing something being positive is hard.
Whats next....sit and wait for things to get better? Go out looking for something new? I am not sure if sitting and waiting is in his genes. Out looking is more like it. He does have a few leads. He is not making any rash decisions, but what harm is looking when you are miserable right? The mayor seems to think this is the best decision he has made while in office. Really in 4 years you have only made one good decision? I think his best decision was hiring Dave, but moving him will probably come back to bite him in the rear! This best decision may not look so good when Dave gives him a resignation letter now will it? Some say he is hard to please and well frankly he is hard to like at this point for me. I have really tried to say good thing about the man since he hired Dave, but maybe folks are right about him. Ashley said it best in the beginning....I just hope he doesn't screw Dave like he has others. Wise woman she is!!!! Looks like he has done exactly that! He is only looking out for himself not his employees. Dave has said if the Mayor was looking out for him wouldn't he of asked him about this switch first? He has said many times he needs votes to pay his mortgage....well I need my husband to be happy and if thats working some where else, well then so be it!
Regrets....No Dave has no regrets about taking the origianl job. He truly loved the street department and all his employees. He has told me many times he is not going to let an opportunity to better himself pass by and look back with regret years later. So as we look out into this unknown future we can only trust that God is in control and leading Dave with all the decision he makes. Besides nothing God does is a regret! So keep Dave in your paryers and me too cause the next several weeks will be tough and lots of DECISIONS will be made!!!!
Untill next time,
Candace
